Descent from the Cross

In this image we see the body of Christ after being removed from the cross. There is the presence of Joseph of Arimathaea on the left, Nicodemus in the middle and Mary kneeling with her hands clasped on the right. This image really should be refered to as the deposition and not the Descent from the Cross as the descent is traditionally depicted as Christ's actual removal from the Cross.

The image is very simple, not crowded, as most depictions of this subject are. There is the absence of the symbols of the Passion; the nails, the crown of thorns, the ladder, ropes, etc. Instead the colors are very drab and earthly, there is no plant life.
