Meet David Pullen, a 1999 graduate of North Shore Senior High School. While in high school, David was involved in football and track. In 2002, he decided to continue his higher education at Northwood Business University in Cedar Hill, TX by joining the Entertainment Sports Promotion Management program. He selected this field as his major because he had always been a fan of entertainment and sports and was intrigued that it shared both aspects. While in college, he also gained valuable experience in entertainment as a Def Jam Representative for the Dallas Market.

In 2006, David was awarded his bachelor’s degree from Northwood Business University. Upon graduation, he realized he wanted to work in a sports related field and began working as a personal trainer at Fitness Connection. During his time there he always received positive feedback from his clients and employees and this encouraged him to take a leap of faith and begin his own business. After gaining four years of experience at Fitness Connection he departed and decided it was time to open up his business, DNA Athletics. At his gym, David focuses on personal training and motivates clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability. He measures their strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments. He also educates his clients in many other aspects of wellness in addition to exercise which includes general health and nutrition guidelines. Soon, he will be transitioning to focus on cross fit.

David thoroughly enjoys his job because it doesn’t feel like work. He is able to focus on his own fitness and help others achieve their goals. He explained how great it feels when his clients overcome a plateau.  David believes his college experience helped shaped him to be the person he is today, and he feels more motivated and confident when providing his services.  Interacting and reaching out to the community is rewarding.

During his free time, David enjoys music, learning to play the piano and learning Spanish so he is able to communicate with his son, who is half African American and half Hispanic. He stays active and involved in the community by coaching his son’s t-ball and basketball teams at the YMCA. This year he will host a sports athletics training on Saturdays to help athletes prepare for off season as well.

David encourages students to always follow their dreams.  He stated, “The only thing standing in the way of you and success, is YOU”. He also suggests closed mouths don’t get fed, so do not being afraid to ask for help.  His advice to those who are thinking of starting their own business is do the necessary research and make sure you know exactly what you are undertaking.  Learning how you can stand out can help you grow your business.  When you provide a good service, it can be the most rewarding feeling one can experience.
