麻豆区 ISD Alumni Spotlight

  • Meet Cathy Hernandez, a 2005 麻豆区 High School graduate. During her time as a high school student, she accomplished more than the average student and was involved in numerous organizations, all of which contributed to her becoming an outstanding student and scholar. Cathy graduated Magna Cum Laude (the top 5% of her high school class), she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Principal and Superintendent’s Advisory Board, Senior Class Representative, and a member of LULAC, the school’s choir, the girls basketball and the Jacketeers.

After high school, Cathy went on to college and earned her bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Houston’s Central campus. She chose this major because of her love for writing and public speaking.  Her goal was to pursue a career as a reporter.  She also wanted to help the community and knew as a reporter she would have that opportunity to incorporate writing and public speaking while still assisting the community. While attending U of H, Cathy was a part of the Cougar Dolls Dance Team, where she entertained, energized and inspired audiences at designated University of Houston Athletic contests and promotional events.  During her last semester of college, she interned for KPRC where she worked the overnight shift (midnight to 7 in the morning) prepping for the morning show.

After she obtained her degree, Cathy continued working at KPRC as an Associate Producer. She was then promoted to Producer and Writer where her job duties included organizing newscasts and setting up stories and putting them in order. During her three years at KPRC, Cathy was able to experience one of the top 10 market newsrooms and take advantage of the behind the scenes action. Cathy was also an NFL Cheerleader for the Houston Texans. Before she joined FOX 31 Denver in April 2014, she worked as a reporter, anchor, and producer in El Paso. She left El Paso for the experience of a bigger city with bigger challenge.  During her time in Denver, she had the opportunity to learn the new cultures of the new city and meet new people. This experience has helped to broaden her horizons and enriched her life with different cultures, giving her new perspectives on the world. Cathy just recently returned back to Houston to work at KPRC as a reporter.

Although Cathy is always busy and devoted to her career, her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, meeting new people, working out, enjoying the outdoors and getting involved in the community. She loves her job because she is able to tell a new story every day, meet new people every day, and it is also an opportunity to make a difference and spur change.  Her future goals are to continue working to make a difference in the community.

Cathy believes if you work hard and dedicate yourself that you can achieve anything. In order to chase and achieve your dreams, you must make sacrifices that won’t be easy but worth it.  She also explained the hardest experience is also the most rewarding. You learn a lot about yourself and what you want out of life.

We are so proud of Cathy’s accomplishments, and we know she will continue to be successful in her future endeavors! Welcome back to Houston and we look forward to seeing you report the daily news! #GPISDProud
