Fast On Facts

  • FASTS ON FACTS
The goal is to provide a district-wide competition to heighten the awareness or importance of fact fluency.

    Campus Responsibilities:
Each campus will be responsible for selecting and preparing one participant and one alternate for each grade level. Only one contestant per grade level will attend and compete in the district competition. Alternates will only attend if a contestant is unable to attend. A timeline will be distributed to assist with campus involvement. Each campus will be responsible for transportation to and from the event.

    District Competitions:
Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade competitions will consist of three categories number recognition, addition and subtraction. There will be 50 problems in each category. In the number recognition category representations will be to 20, using subitizing strategies (dot patterns, ten frames, ect). The time limit will be 30 seconds for the number recognition and 45 seconds for addition and subtraction categories with facts to 20. The problems will be presented horizontally with a line as the answer blank. A tie breaker assessment will be administered with a mixed variety of problems. We will use a folder system and each category will be administered separately.

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade competitions will consist of four categories addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There will be 100 problems in each category. The time limit will be 45 seconds per category. On addition and subtraction the focus will be on facts to 20 and on multiplication and division it will be facts up to 12 X 12. The problems will be presented horizontally with a line as the answer blank. A tie breaker assessment will be administered with a mixed variety of problems. We will use a folder system and each category will be administered separately.

Scoring will be performed by a panel of judges, selected by the district math department. All categories will be combined into one score of items correct over total number of items, resulting in a percent score.

District Awards: Each contestant will be recognized at the district competition and receive a certificate. 1st , 2nd, and 3rd place trophies will be awarded for each grade level.
