Starbase

  • Our fifth grade students have participated for 5 years in an amazing opportunity to attend a trip called STARBASE. It is held at Ellington Field and allows thirty at-risk 5th graders, from each elementary campus, the opportunity to have five days of hands-on learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. There is also an emphasis on career and college readiness. The Department of Defense sponsors the program so there is no cost to the school or students other than transportation and one day at the Challenger Mission.

Students participate in 5 days of activities that include states of matter, force and motion, measurement, and more. They will get hands-on experiments, build and launch a rocket, and do a flight simulator on the computer where they are the pilot. They get a tour of an area of Ellington Field (such as the Coast Guard chopper or the Predator drones). Students are chosen for science enrichment and based on several criteria, targeted at helping our at-risk or low-income students.
